The Whitfield Echlin Lyceum
Today’s knowledge, tomorrow’s wisdom.
Research, inquiry and dialogue. The firm’s research arm. Not a blog, and not a marketing channel.
The Whitfield Echlin Lyceum exists to pursue a single question from many directions: what does it take to build a society, its institutions, its communities and its civic culture, that is prosperous, cohesive, and built to last? I pursue that question through history and psychology above all, and across whatever other disciplines the evidence demands, bringing academics, historians, and practitioners into dialogue around questions that matter and resist easy answers.
The practice grounds the inquiry. The inquiry deepens the practice. Each is stronger for the other.
Outputs
How the inquiry takes form.
Research papers
Longer, sourced work on questions that do not fit a briefing note.
Occasional papers
Shorter, timely pieces when a single question will not wait.
The Lyceum Letter
A periodic publication from the inquiry, not a marketing newsletter.
Commentary
Regular current-affairs pieces written in the same voice as the practice: plain, unwilling to hedge.
Public lectures
Spoken inquiry. Arguments made in a room, not only on a page.
Research partnerships
Work with academics and practitioners who are asking the same stubborn questions.
The Forum
Discussion-led seminars and dialogues, with academics, historians, policymakers, and practitioners in the same room. Equal in importance to the written work. Still to come.
More to come
Papers, letters and The Forum will appear here.
If you are an academic, historian or practitioner who wants to be in the room when they do, write to me.
